So Mari is getting coached by her big sister, Hana. She’s doing okay, for never having driven a stick shift before. She gets the car to move some but the whole clutch thing when stopping is causing issues. Lots of stalling and flooded startups with views from inside and out of the car. Mari stalls it pretty good at one point where Hana has to get behind the wheel and try to get it running again but it’s flooded bad! This part ends with Hana not having much luck getting it fired up!
**Sorry for the gear shifter being in the way on the foot cam when Hana is pumping the hell out of near the end! This was a new spot to place the camera.**

Hana Teaching Mari To Drive The Volvo / Hard To Start Really Cold/ Clip 2 Of 3 / PIP
As we continue from clip one Mari is giving the engine short revs. Shish tells Hana to have Mari back the Volvo out of its parking space. Hana tells Mari to push down on the clutch and her right foot on the brake Hana puts the gearshift in reverse, Hana shows Mari with hand jesters how to press down on the gas pedal and let off the clutch to get he Volvo to move.
Mari gives the engine a little bit of gas not too much she lets off the clutch she gets the Volvo to move back a little bit maybe about fifteen feet at the most, the engine stalls on her. Hana is talking to Mari through out clip two. Shish is getting video from time to time from the front of the Volvo through the windshield and the rear of the Volvo as both Mari and Hana try getting the Volvo to start.
Mari has a little bit of trouble reaching the brake pedal she’s a little bit short, the Volvo rolls forward a little bit right back where they started from, Hana tells Mari to let the Volvo roll a little more so she can put the gearshift in neutral Mari tries to get the Volvo to start back up it takes her a few minutes to get the engine to start.
It looks like Mari might have flooded the carburetor a little bit the engine tries to catch if you watch Mari’s right foot as the engine tries to catch her foot is almost all the way down to the floor the engine almost starts. Hana tells Mari when the engine is about to catch let go of the ignition key and press down on the gas pedal to keep the engine running. Mari gets the Volvo started she warms up the engine for close to a couple of minutes that does no good.
Hana asks Mari do you want me to backup the Volvo? Mari nods no. As Mari is backing up when the engine stalls again Hanna is giving pointers on how to work the gas pedal and the clutch, the Volvo rolls forward a little bit Hana has Mari press down on the brake pedal so she can put the gearshift in neutral. Mari tries to get the Volvo to start for a couple of minutes.
Hana asks her would she like to switch places with her, now Hana is in the drivers seat Mari gets out through the drivers door and walks around and gets in the passenger door. Hana is cranking and pumping the Volvo’s gas pedal.
The engine tries to catch it looks like the carburetor is flooded. I wonder if either Hana or Mari though to push the choke all the way in on Mari’s first attempted to backup? You would think the engine would not run when you try to put it in gear. Just thinking out loud.
Hana is cranking and pumping the Volvo’s gas pedal although the engine will try to catch she almost had it started at one point at the end. Hana towards the end will pump the gas pedal a few times and hold the gas pedal all the way to the floor to clear out the carburetor.
As clip two is about to come to an end. Shish is getting video of the rear of the Volvo as Hana is trying to get it to start and clear out the carburetor of excess gas.
As the PTP copyright logo pops up on the screen Hana is trying to clear the carburetor by holding the gas pedal all the way to the floor.
What will clip three bring us? Will Hana clear the carburetor of excess gas? Is the choke pulled out all the way? If so will Hana think to push it in?
We will have to wait and find out in clip three until then pleasant dreams. 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
I just have one request should Mari decide to have more lessons from her sister Hana in learning how to drive a standard shift car. Realizing that it undoubtedly was cold on the day that this 3 part vid was filmed, in a 2nd lesson, (hopefully in warmer weather) could Mari and Hana be dressed in something lighter? I can envision how great both of those women would look wearing cut off shorts/jeans were it to be 80 degrees or above. A suggestion for Mari, who seemed to have trouble feeling the clutch pedal specifically because she was wearing those heavy winter boots. She might try wearing instead ballet flats, flip flops, sneakers, sandals, (low heeled) or even go at it barefoot. In addition to the fact that it would look sexy, through personal experience with other young women first learning how to drive a stick being able to work the pedals in anything but heavy boots, (or high heels) will make it much easier to coordinate the clutch, gas and brake pedals. There is that one specific part in engaging the clutch where it catches, and coordinated with pressing the gas pedal the vehicle will actually begin to move forward, (or backward). In my opinion based on what Mari was wearing and actually said at one point on camera, those heavy boots were creating more problems than she needed.
Hopefully one of the two can get the Volvo started in Part III. Poor Mari was only able to move the car backward some 8 – 10 feet twice before the car stalled out -more due to the fact that she still had not gotten used to the fact that she needed to engage the clutch pedal while braking the car to a stop; that or she wasn’t giving it enough gas to keep the car moving without it stalling out on her. Then, unfortunately for both sisters, they only ended up having a whale of a time trying to get the Volvo re-started each time that the car stalled out on Mari.
Hang in there Mari! You’ll eventually learn how to drive a standard shift car as Hana is a great and very patient teacher!!
